When Should You Schedule Fall Leaf Cleanup in Boston? (And What Happens If You Wait)

Published October 2026

Every fall we get the same question: "When should I book my leaf cleanup?" And every fall, the homeowners who wait until "all the leaves are down" end up doing their cleanup in the rain in late November — or worse, not at all before the first snow.

We've done over 240 leaf cleanup and raking jobs around Greater Boston. Here's what that experience says about timing.

The short answer: plan for two rounds

In Boston, leaves drop over roughly six weeks — mid-October through the end of November, depending on the year and your trees. Oaks in particular hang on until Thanksgiving. One cleanup can't catch everything unless you schedule it very late, and scheduling it very late is a gamble against weather.

The schedule that works best for most of our customers:

  • First cleanup: late October to early November. This catches the maples and most of the volume, so your lawn isn't smothered for weeks.
  • Final cleanup: mid-to-late November. This catches the oaks and stragglers and puts the yard to bed for winter.

What happens if you skip it

A layer of wet leaves left on grass all winter does real damage:

  • Snow mold and fungus. Matted leaves trap moisture against the grass. Under snow cover, that's a recipe for gray patches in April.
  • Dead spots. Grass under heavy leaf cover is cut off from light and air. Those areas come back thin — or don't come back.
  • A much bigger spring cleanup. Wet, frozen, compacted leaves are far slower to remove in March than dry leaves in November. You pay for the postponement either way.
Before: the same Brookline lawn under a full layer of leaves, the cover that turns into snow mold once the first snow lands on it.

Gutters: the cleanup people forget

The same leaves on your lawn are in your gutters. Clogged gutters overflow, and in winter that overflow becomes ice — on your walkway, against your foundation, or as ice dams on the roof edge. If you're booking a late-fall cleanup, it's the natural time to have gutters cleared too. Gutter cleaning is done by our handyman crew: Greater Boston Handyman Services

Bags: leave them or take them?

Boston-area yard waste collection runs on specific weeks, and not everyone wants twenty paper bags sitting by the fence. On our jobs, customers choose: leave bags, and we stage them for city yard waste pickup, or remove bags, and we haul them away. There's no wrong answer — it just changes the quote, so decide before the visit.

Book before the rush
